Dr. Ruth P. Newton, Ph.D.
is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY 12117) specialized in the use of attachment and affect regulation theories in interventions from birth through adulthood. She was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at UCSD and has been in the Allan Schore Los Angeles Study Group for Affective Neurobiology since 2004. Dr. Newton has extensive clinical experience working with children of all ages, individual adults, couples, and families using attachment and affect regulation interventions. She is the author of The Attachment Connection designed to help parents raise secure, emotionally regulated children. All Newton Center for Affect Regulation services are performed by independent licensed mental health clinicians and/or supervised licensing eligible interns trained in iRT.
NCAR Staff
Paola K. Sabio, MS Project Coordinator and Project Clinician
Paola Sabio is a bilingual Registered Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (#4312) with experience working with school-aged children, teens, and adults as a Preschool Visiting Teacher for San Diego Unified School District and in a church setting. She received Certification as an Early Childhood Socio-Emotional and Behavior Regulation Intervention Specialist and graduated with a Master’s degree in Child Development with an emphasis in Early Childhood Mental Health from San Diego State University in 2016. Paola has facilitated parenting workshops and trained school staff to become Positive Discipline Parent Educators. She is an iRT trained dyadic clinician serving families on NCAR’s First5/HDS//FHCSD grants. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Education and is a part-time Lecturer in the Child and Family Development Department at San Diego State University. Paola is interested in issues of social justice, diversity, and equity and how these issues impact overall development and the mental health of children and families.
Maria G. Ortega, LMFT Project Clinician
Maria Ortega is a bilingual Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (#49264). She received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master’s degree in Counseling from San Diego State University. Maria has been providing mental health services in the community since 2007. She is trained in Integrative Regulation Therapy (iRT) and serves as a therapist on our First 5/FHCSD/NCAR grants providing clinical services to Latina mothers and their young children. She also sees children and families at NCAR. Maria is interested in Early Childhood Mental Health, the mental health of developing children, and pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders.
Eunice I. Santizo, MA Project Clinician
Eunice is a bilingual Registered Associate in Marriage and Family Therapist (#122965) with experience working with groups, teens and adults. Eunice received her B.S. in Human Development from the San Diego Christian College, and her M.A in Counseling Psychology from the Southern California Seminary. Eunice is completing her training in Integrative Regulation Therapy (iRT) as a staff member of NCAR. She is interested in pursuing her Doctorate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Eunice is passionate about helping the community’s adolescents as well as their families.
Marilyn Lopez-Eguia, BS Data Entry & Administrative Assistant
Marilyn received her Bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Development and a Certification as an Early Childhood and Socio-Emotional and Behavior Regulation Intervention Specialist from San Diego State University. She will also be completing her training in Integrative regulation Therapy (iRT) as a staff member of NCAR. Marilyn has facilitated parenting workshops and provided behavioral support services to children and families in the community since 2011. She is interested in continuing with her education and becoming a licensed therapist in the future. Her desire is to continue advocating for young children and their families through individualized support.
Candida G. Martinez, MS Research Assistant
Candida received her B.S. in Psychology and Pre-Medicine from the University of New Mexico and a M.S. in Child and Family Development from San Diego State University where she also received a Certification as an Early Childhood and Socio-Emotional and Behavior Regulation Intervention Specialist. Candida is currently pursuing a M.A. in Couple Family Therapy at Alliant International University where she is studying to become a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Candida hopes to specialized in psychodynamic therapy and attachment theory with developmentally disabled population and their families. She is also interested in helping the male population achieve secure attachment. Candida is completing her training in Integrative Regulation therapy (iRT) as a staff member of NCAR.
Current Projects
First 5/HDS/FHCSD/NCAR Behavioral 3 Dyadic Parent/Infant Intervention and the Maternal Services Project for Central Region
Grants funded through Family Health Centers San Diego, lead agent for the East and Central Regions of San Diego County for Healthy Development Services (HDS) funded by First 5 San Diego focusing on improving the “physical health, developmental status, school readiness, and life prospects of all children ages 0-5.” The Parent/Infant Project provides services in the Central Region to high risk, low income mothers and their infants under 12 months of age. The Maternal Services Project provides services in the Central Region to depressed, low income mothers and their children age birth to 5 years.
